It was a very informative session and gave a greater understanding of opportunities available through apprenticeships. If your son/daughter was unable to take part in the session and would like to view the presentation, it can be found on this page (left).

Careers in Racing

Find out about Early Career Programmes & Apprenticeships in Horseracing

Have your students ever thought about a career in the Horseracing industry? There are various career paths they can take, some of which they may never have even thought about and a wide range of training to support them on their journey.

Foundation training at our racing schools, the National Horseracing College and the British Racing School, leads to completing an apprenticeship in a racing yard, which allows you to work hands-on with horses. There are similar options in Scotland with the Scottish Racing Academy.

There is also an option for those that want to work with horses but maybe don’t want to ride. The National Stud offers an Entry to Stud Employment Course for those with no experience handling horses, leading to a role in the breeding industry.

If media interests your students, then there is the Racing Media Academy who provide students with work experience and training at some of the largest media companies within Horseracing. This involves a one-week course at the British Racing School, followed by a paid placement in one of the many racing media outlets. Applications are invited in November.

The National Skills Academy Rail Apprenticeship Opportunities

There is a common misconception that the rail industry jobs consists of manual labour and shift work, and it’s traditionally been a male-dominated work environment. Routes into Rail is a programme run on behalf of the whole rail sector, who are keen to dispel these myths and demonstrate that rail is a truly welcoming and inclusive place for all to work in.

Over the last 5 years, we have seen an increase in women undertaking roles such as senior business managers, train drivers and electrical engineering in rail. The workforce has seen the percentage of females entering the rail sector, grow from 8% to 17%. This is an achievement for the industry, but it’s still not good enough. We want to aim towards a 50/50 gender split. This is why we are reaching out to you, to ask you to look again at rail and look beyond what you might see at your local railway station, and consider the huge range of roles in this vast and growing industry.

Rail needs not only engineers and train drivers, but need employees with skills in digital to prepare us for the future. There are environmental jobs, as rail carefully plans its expansion through the countryside. There are communications, customer service, commercial roles – this list goes on.

If you have so far dismissed the idea of working in rail, we ask you to help us re-write rail and make it a truly diverse place to work.
