Students at George Abbot School are celebrating after being awarded National Lottery funding of £8,885 to introduce outdoor table tennis in the school grounds. The grant, awarded through Sport England, will fund tables, equipment and coaching, allowing students to play every day whether in break times or at a dedicated after school club.
Assistant Headteacher, Matt Goulborn commented: ‘We are delighted to have received funding from Sport England for the launch of our new table tennis scheme at George Abbot. Our aim is engage as many students as possible in sport and the tables will be a great help. Table tennis is a sport that can be enjoyed by all and our plan is to encourage students who currently do not partake in extra-curricular activity at school through after school and lunch time clubs.’’
Head of PE, Catherine Graves: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for students at George Abbot. As a PE Department, our aim is to promote and encourage a healthy active lifestyle and a lifelong love of physical activity for all our students. Expanding our extra-curricular offer even further with Table Tennis will allow us to further improve participation rates and offer fully inclusive provision. We are excited to see the impact this scheme will have.’
Thanks to all those who play the National Lottery, hundreds of students have taken up bats and balls within days of the tables arriving, taking advantage of the warm weather to enjoy ping pong in the playground and on the field.
